Identifying Wholesale Products That Sell

When you’re paging through a wholesaler supplier’s catalog, it’s hard to know exactly which wholesale products will sell and which ones will be duds. A given product might seem great to you, but you might find that once you list it for sale no one seems to bite. Identifying wholesale products that sell is part science and part art.

To start with, you should pick products that you yourself would buy and that you will be comfortable selling. Now, the fact that you’d buy it isn’t enough to choose that particular product; you still need to research the product. After all, you want to identify wholesale products that sell, not ones that you happen to think are cool. Still, this is a good jumping off point and many people in the drop ship business like to start here, with what they like and what they know.

Next, you need to look at the bare numbers. Go online to a site like eBay. Look up the product or products you’re trying to sell. Are there many listed for auction? Do a search for closed auctions, as well. This allows you to see if all of those products listed are actually being bought, or if they’re just sitting on the eBay “shelves” collecting virtual dust.

You may also be able to examine the wholesale supplier’s statistics. They may be able to tell you how many units of a given product have sold over the past month, for example. While not every wholesale supplier is willing or able to provide you with that kind of information, it can be an invaluable part of identifying which wholesale products sell.

The next thing you need to think about concerning a particular product is the product’s profit margin. It might be a great product, and one that sells. But if the product sells for a dollar less than what it cost you to buy it and maintain your sales and marketing efforts, it’s no good to you. You need to either move on to the next product or find that product at a lower wholesale price.

Identifying wholesale products that sell isn’t always an easy task. In addition, you will sometimes find a product that’s selling just fine, that you can make money from, and find that you’re not selling any at all. Just having the right product isn’t enough to make you successful, but you can bet you won’t succeed if you don’t have the right products.
