What is drop shipping? Part One

Drop shipping has garnered quite a lot of attention over the past few years, presenting an easy way to become an Internet retailer. Is it just another get-rich-quick scheme? Multi-level pyramid deal? Flash in the pan? Not really. Like anything, you do have to put some energy into it. When you first consider the concept of drop shipping, it seems remarkably simple. You don’t have to carry any inventory, and you don’t have to do any shipping. You just put up a web site, send the orders to the drop shipper, and collect the checks.

Well, it’s not really that easy, folks. Successful drop shipping involves successfully doing two things: Making a good product selection, and marketing. On the product selection front, it’s easy to just load up everything the drop shipper has to offer into your virtual catalog, but a more effective method is to create a niche for yourself—specializing in one particular area. Don’t try to be everything to everybody, because the customer will just get lost. Specialize in one area and position yourself as the expert in that area. On the second front, marketing—again, it’s easy to just put up a web site, but will anybody see it? How many web sites are out there today? With no marketing, again, it will get completely lost.

That said, drop shipping can be an effective management technique, especially for handling inventory.

Drop shipping, for the uninitiated, is a form of inventory control whereby the retailer sells his items to the customer, but instead of having a supply of the item on his shelves for immediate delivery, the retailer orders his items directly from the manufacturer or the wholesaler, who then ships them directly to the retailer’s customer. In this way, there is no need for the burden of carrying inventory. The retailer still retains his profit margin as a difference between the wholesaler’s or manufacturer’s price and that of the retailer.

Often, the final customer never knows that the retailer is drop shipping his merchandise because the retailer chooses not to disclose this up front, thereby hiding his inventory control from view. There are several ways to hide the drop shipping from customers. The best way to do this is to have the manufacturer or wholesaler ship the product with the retailer’s name and logo on the packaging slip.

The benefits are obvious: no inventory means less cost can be passed on the retail customer, and the retailer retains positive cash flow throughout the entire process. The potential downside is that it may take longer for the customer order to be fulfilled, since it’s going through a third party, there may be a backorder that the retailer is unaware of, and the retailer’s markup will not be as high as if they were sourcing, warehousing, and shipping the product direct.

In part two of this article, I will explain a few of the positives and negatives of drop shipping in more detail, and how the retailer who drop ships can benefit in the end. To be sure, there are negatives to the drop shipping idea, but they are manageable if you know how to navigate the drop shipping maze.

Choosing A Niche For Your Wholesale Business

If you’ve been thinking about starting a business that uses wholesale suppliers to drop ship products to your customers, make sure you don’t miss the first, and most important step. You need to decide, in the beginning, what niche you want to choose for your business. The niche you choose will impact everything about your business, from the wholesale suppliers you choose to the type of marketing plan you decide to implement.

You see, an entire market is too broad for all but the largest of companies to try to take on. For a small business, especially one that’s just starting out, it’s best to divide the demand in the market into smaller, more manageable niches. By operating your wholesale business in a specific niche, you can focus your efforts on a specific type of buyer who’s looking for certain specialized goods.

One of the most important components in choosing a niche for your wholesale business is doing a market survey. You need to do a market survey in order to understand what products are being sold in a niche, as well as the areas that your competitors are already entrenched. By taking a look at the market, how much product is being sold and who is selling it, you can figure out where you belong. Ideally, you’re looking for an arrangement of factors including price, service, quality and product type that will maximize your sales while facing the least amount of direct competition.

You also need to consider your own interests and abilities when you’re choosing a niche for your wholesale business. For example, if you have no interest whatsoever in consumer electronics, it probably isn’t a great idea to start a consumer electronics drop ship business. The fact of the matter is that your desire and passion are a key element in being able to see your business succeed. Choose a niche that you know something about, and that you have some interest in.

As you go through the process of finding a niche, try to avoid thinking only about wholesale suppliers and costs. You might be able to buy products at a wholesale price that’s extremely competitive, but if you can’t find someone to buy those products or you can’t effectively market those products, your business won’t succeed. In addition, low wholesale prices also mean that your competition probably also has access to that kind of pricing, meaning you’ll have to find another area, whether it’s service or marketing, in which you need to offer something to your consumer that your competition can’t offer.

Why Your Drop Ship Business Needs a Business Plan

Many people who enter the drop ship business do so with plenty of motivation, but with very little in the way of planning. The fact of the matter is that a drop ship business isn’t all that different from any other business, in terms of what it takes to succeed. One of the most important steps in starting a small business of any type is to develop a solid business plan.

It’s important, first, to understand exactly what a business plan is. The business plan is a document you create that defines the goals of your business, and that outlines the procedures your business will follow in order to achieve those goals. A business plan is essential if you need to raise capital for your new business. In addition, the business plan acts as something of a blueprint in the areas of management and finance for starting up a profitable business venture.

Why do you need a business plan to start a drop ship business? A business plan does several things for you. As we mentioned earlier, it helps in the process of trying to raise capital. Any investor that you want to ask to help your business get off the ground is likely going to want to see a solid business plan before she lays out that capital. This is especially important in the drop ship business realm, as many investors may not be entirely familiar with what a drop ship business is or how it works.

A good business plan also helps you know where you’re going. The business plan should include, for example, financial projections. It should be able to project when the business will go from becoming a start up business to actually becoming profitable, for example. While a business plan isn’t a magical crystal ball able to tell you what happens in the future, you can use the business plan to identify at what stages the business truly starts to make money.

A final area that a business plan can help your drop ship business is in the area of the market. Part of what goes into a good business plan is a market analysis. This allows you to identify your competition from the start, and figure out how you can get an advantage over the competition. A solid market analysis is essential to knowing whether or not you can expect your drop ship business to succeed, and how soon you can expect it.

Find Great Drop Shippers And They Will Come

The success of your business relies, ultimately, on how good your drop ship supplier is. If your drop ship supplier is completely unreliable and provides products that aren’t of a sufficient quality, your customers are not going to be satisfied and your sales will drop like a lead balloon. Knowing how to find the best vendors is integral to the success of your business.

Before you can find the best drop ship suppliers, of course, you need to know what products you are going to sell. You need to figure out what products are in demand, an what products you can sell at a profit. It doesn’t hurt to also have a good idea of how saturated the market is for those products, as high competition usually means smaller profit margins.

Once you have selected a product, you need to start looking for a vendor. Finding the right best drop ship supplier can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are some shortcuts you can take. For example, one of the best ways to find a vendor is through word of mouth. You can talk to other small business owners, for example, who may be able to make recommendations. Obviously your competitors may not be able to give you this kind of information, but you might be able to get it from people selling products in a niche that’s similar to yours.

Another great way to find the best drop ship suppliers is through a directory. There are many online directories of drop ship suppliers. Of course, not all of these directories are the same. Some are more current than others, for example. Some are more extensive than others, too. Choosing the right directory is key if you’re going to be able to trust the information in that directory.

You may also be able to find drop ship suppliers at trade shows in your niche. Most market segments have some form of trade show or another, whether it’s a regional meeting or whether it’s something on a much larger scale, such as the E3 Electronics Expo that takes place in Las Vegas each year.

Ultimately, the success of your online business relies heavily on your drop ship supplier. If you have a good drop ship supplier, it doesn’t guarantee that your business will be successful; however, if your vendor is unreliable, your business is almost certainly doomed to failure.

Easy Drop Shipping Tips

If you are a newcomer to the drop shipping arena of late, perhaps you have noticed that there are a few patterns that emerge when trying to find a good drop shipping source.  It seems there is some confusion about how to cut through some of the turmoil that comes with the territory.  Here are a few tips to keep your small enterprise running smoothly, and maybe even avoid a few hassles along the way.

Perhaps the best tip for those of us who have been around drop shipping on a regular basis, is to be certain you are with an established drop ship source.  Sound like common sense?  It is, but you would be surprised how many web based retailers are finding that their sources are going out of business just when they were getting used to doing business with that source.  The internet is dynamic, global, and constantly changing.  Gone are the days when you could count on a wholesaler to be there when you need product.  Many are new to the web and are not as adept as they need to be about who their wholesale sources are, and as a consequence they are relying on a single source for their product.

Make sure you use established sources for your product by finding out how long they have been in business, and how long they have been selling your specific product.  If they have been around for more than a year, they are a much safer bet they will continue as a solid source.

Another good tip is to use wholesaler forums.  Often, these are great resources for the beginning entrepreneur and the experienced alike to gather and share best practices, and often the best practices can be regional in nature, depending on the clientele and the country where you are doing much of your business.

The best tip I’ve come across lately is to develop a personal relationship with your source, and cultivate it.  Someone who has been around the Internet wholesale market for a while can give you some good tips, and they often have insider info that can help.  But you have to cultivate these relationships first, so stay in touch and develop a contact that will keep you connected.

A few easy tips like these can be enormously helpful to the new web based entrepreneur.

Drop Ship – Tips to Improve Your competitive Edge

One of the harsh realities of having a drop shipping business is that there will be competitors that offer the same or similar products at a lower price. If you’re selling a product, for example, that can be found in a Wal-Mart store, you’re going to have a hard time trying to compete with their price. Even online vendors, such as Amazon, will probably be able to sell products at a lower price because they buy in huge volumes from their wholesale suppliers.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do in your drop ship business to counteract situations where a competitor has a lower price.

First of all, you can concentrate on your product descriptions. Write your product descriptions in a more persuasive and compelling way than your competition. It can even be worth hiring a sales copywriting professional to help you along this process.

Don’t underestimate the power of a good photo, either. High quality photos are one of the key secrets to a sale, especially online. Because your customer can’t handle the item, she relies on your pictures to convince her to buy the product. Use a good camera, and make sure you get all sorts of detailed pictures if you’re taking the pictures yourself. Consider ordering one of the products from your supplier and taking the picture yourself to add an element of uniqueness.

Another thing you can do to compete with low prices is to offer a bonus. The bonus you offer can be a tangible product, or it can be something that has little cost. For example, you could write an ebook on how to install toilet repair parts and include it as a free gift whenever someone orders toilet repair parts from your website.

You can also use product reviews and comparisons. This helps to give your website additional content, but it also helps your customer to make a decision while they’re on your website. From there, it’s just a click for them to buy the product.

You should also use your sales process to upsell. Have your order process recommend an additional product to your customer. Once your customer receives their purchase, send them a special offer for buying another product.

While these tactics won’t guarantee you will beat the competition every time, they will increase your sales and help take some sales away from the lower priced competition.

Starting your own online business

How many times have you heard somebody say, “I’m going to sell stuff on the Internet!” The rough economy has made this proclamation even more common, as out-of-work and marginally employed individuals come out of the woodwork, looking for something to generate income.

The competition is fierce, and there are more people than ever trying it–but at the same time, starting your own online business has never been better.  Yes, you read that right.  Even during today’s recession, Internet sales are booming. There are plenty of advantages to having a retail outlet on the web, not the least of which is that Internet-based shopping save the customer time and money as compared to shopping at the mall. The price of a gallon of gas is going up again, and consumers are looking to keep those trips to a minimum. And in the middle of the financial crisis, the advantages of online shopping are even more pronounced. As a result, the business of Internet retailing has both a downside (lots of competition), and an upside (consumers looking for bargains).

There are millions of retail outlets on the Web today looking to get in on the rising business model of a home-based business, but only a relative handful are successful. Far too many others go out of business for one reason or another, and in the end, are stuck with a basement full of inventory that gets used as Christmas presents for the next ten years.

One of the most important elements of success is finding a good network of wholesale suppliers, and finding a niche product that isn’t already being sold by thousands of other online retailers. Come up with a short list of retail ideas, and do some quick searches on that concept. See who else is selling it, and for how much. If there are five or ten other retail shops selling it online, then you’re still in good shape–but if your search turns up thousands, then you’re going to be invisible. Even if there are a few other outlets selling the same thing, don’t give up. The idea here is to make your idea different enough to make a difference in who gets the click-through that gets the sale.

Internet marketing is about getting the right product, creating the right image, and specifically targeting your potential audience effectively.  If you can reach your audience effectively, you are nearly there.  Now all you have to do is give them what they want with solid choices to choose from and a way of enticing them to buy, such as with sales and other attractive techniques.  Starting small and then building upon your idea step-by-step will help those sales increase in this bewildering virtual marketplace–and it will get you the experience you need to build your business later with more product and more targeted marketing techniques.  Getting the web to work for you rather than being intimidated by it is much of the battle for the new home based entrepreneur.

International or local sourcing?

The internet is a fascinating world all its own.  A bewildering array of sites can be had on virtually any topic, but what about getting product for your new Internet-based retail shop? It’s an intimidating prospect. Should you go local, or should you go international, where there are countless wholesale outlets that can get you the product you want and at unusually low pricing compared to their domestic counterparts here in the states?

The good news with importing lower cost goods to your outlet is that they are often at much lower cost than the same item even at a local wholesaler’s bargain basement prices.  And many of them are of very good quality and visually appealing.  Foreign retailers cater to their local markets, and their items are often marketed visually to their clientele in different ways than their American counterparts.  And that difference can make them more appealing to an American audience with slightly different tastes.  But the bad news with foreign sources is that there are taxes, customs, and higher shipping costs associated with buying their products, and there is always the worry that the items you want to sell might not be legal to sell in America for different reasons.  Radioactive uranium-based jewelry looks great, but it will never get past the Geiger counter in customs!  And then there is the issue of time with foreign sources that enters the picture as well. Your product will take longer to get to you. Overseas shipping is complex. If you are shipping small, lightweight products, you may be able to use a flat-rate FedEx box, which depending on what you’re shipping, can be very cost-effective. You can fit a lot of earrings, bangles and necklaces in one of those boxes! But if your product is larger, the flat-rate FedEx adds too much cost to shipping, and you may need to purchase enough volume to ship by container.

On the other hand, local sources have their positives and negatives as well.  The local source can skip the shipping costs altogether if you can pick it up yourself, and you can inspect the product and get a general feel of the quality of the merchandise by looking at it yourself, rather than a picture on a web site.  And you don’t have to worry about time to get your product to market.  And even better, you can develop a relationship with the local wholesaler that is far more personal than a foreign merchant, and that can pay big dividends in the long run.

Should you use a local or an international source for drop shipping?  Take your pick, but it is buyer beware in both cases.  Do your homework and be careful. Get some advice from wholesaler forums for more information.

Starting An Online Business With Drop Shipping

If you’ve ever seen a commercial on television advertising that you can sell products without ever having to handle them, it’s probably talking about a drop shipping online business. The good news is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars paying for information from the people on TV. Instead, you can start an online business with drop shipping with a relatively small investment, some hard work, and a little bit of knowledge.

The first thing you need to do if you want to be successful is to plan appropriately. While you might be anxious to jump right in and get started, you need to approach your online drop shipping business the same way you would any business. You need to work up a good business plan. While drop shipping means that you don’t have to worry about things like warehouse space or buying a starting inventory, there are plenty of things you need to consider.

For example, you need to carefully develop a marketing plan. An online drop shipping business means that you don’t have to put out money on a standing inventory, but you will have to spend some money on marketing. Know what kind of marketing you want to do, and develop some specific ideas for marketing campaigns. From search engine marketing to social media marketing, there are many methods you can use to get the word out about your products. Choosing the right methods is key to getting started right.

You also need to choose the right products. You want to choose products that have a specific market, but not ones that are being sold everywhere else online. Just because someone else is selling the same products doesn’t mean you can’t sell them too. However, the more competition you have, the harder you’ll have to work at your marketing efforts to sell your products.

Choosing the right wholesale suppliers is also integral to the success of your online drop shipping business. You want to choose suppliers with a solid reputation, who produce quality products, and who ship on time. After all, it’s your reputation that’s on the line. A wholesale supplier can make or break your business, so be careful about who you pick.

Finally, you need to remember that your online drop shipping business will take time to grow. You’re not going to be a millionaire overnight. In addition, many small businesses fold within the first few months. How well you’ve planned for your business can make the difference, and keep you from being just another failed online drop shipping business.

Choosing A Drop Ship Wholesale Product

Whether you’re an online retailer who wants to add some products to your catalog, or whether you’re just getting started in the drop ship wholesale arena, choosing the right products to sell is key to your success. You might be able to find a great product at a reasonable wholesale price, but you still have to find people that want to buy that product in order to make a profit. As you wade through the variety of wholesalers and the products they offer, here are some things that you should keep in mind in order to choose the most profitable and successful products:

1. See who else is selling the product. If there are thousands of vendors on thousands of websites selling the exact same drop ship wholesale product, chances are you’re not going to get that big of a slice of the consumer pie. You will have to fight hard for each sale, competing with everyone else. On the other hand, if there is no one selling the product, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve struck gold; it could be that the product just isn’t in demand.

2. Pick a product that is in a specific target niche. This benefits you in several ways. First of all, you can market to that niche specifically, and focus your advertising efforts so as to get the best results from the least amount of effort and money. In other words, you’ll stretch your marketing dollar much farther when you target a specific niche. If you choose a product that appeals to everyone, you’ll have a much bigger potential market but you also have a much bigger pool of people to try to appeal to. You’ll probably have more competition selling general goods, too, rather than when you’re selling something in a particular niche.

3. Keep in mind that selling drop ship wholesale product isn’t a magic formula that will make you rich overnight. Yes, there is plenty of money to make in this way. You’re going to have to work hard, you’re going to have to invest some time and money, and you’re going to have to have at least a little bit of good luck. Drop shipping doesn’t mean you don’t invest money, it just means you invest it in areas other than a standing inventory.

Choosing the right drop ship wholesale product can make the difference between a successful business and one that stagnates. Do the research before you commit to specific product lines.
