Unexpected Challenges for New Drop Ship Businesses

The drop ship business can be very profitable for the person who knows what they’re doing and knows how to do it. If you are smart about how you make your decisions, there’s no reason why you can’t be successful in your new drop ship business. However, there are some specific challenges that drop ship businesses face that few other businesses do, and knowing what those are ahead of time will give you a head start when it comes to facing, and overcoming, those challenges.

Challenge #1: Unanticipated Costs

One of the big myths about starting a new drop ship business is that you can do it for free. While it’s true that you don’t need to make a huge investment to get going, there are some costs involved. Whether it’s a simple and inexpensive cost like web hosting, or whether it’s the cost of paying for advertising traffic, these costs are very real and very necessary.

The benefit that starting a new drop ship business has over a traditional business isn’t that there’s no cost; it is that you don’t have to lay out a huge amount of cash up front to build an inventory or warehouse facilities. All of the other costs associated with doing business are still there, and you have to pay them.

Challenge #2: Unreliable Wholesalers

Most businesses, except those that exist in a purely service capacity, are going to face issues with suppliers at some point. Unfortunately, in the drop ship business world, there are an awful lot of suppliers that just don’t come through for you. For the drop ship business this is especially important, because you rely on your wholesale supplier to package and ship your products, in addition to supplying the product itself. While a brick and mortar business may be able to easily deal with supplier problems, it’s harder in the drop ship business.

Like we’ve said before, properly choosing your wholesalers is key if you want to be successful.

Challenge #3: Time Requirements

Many people enter the world of drop shipping thinking that they can just sit back and watch the money roll in. That is far from the truth. In the same way your new drop ship business takes a certain amount of money to get started, it also takes a certain amount of time. No, you don’t have to spend time dealing with inventory management or a physical building. Instead, you need to spend that time growing your business with marketing activities.
