If you are thinking about starting up a niche drop ship business, one of the most important things you need to do is properly choose your niche. It does you no good to select products to sell if there just isn’t a demand for them. Successful niche drop ship businesses will get creative when it comes to choosing a niche.
Think narrow
One of the reasons you are in the niche drop ship business is to reduce the amount of competition. Only the largest of companies could expect to sell products across an entire market. So, you focus in on your area.
Take, for example, the area of consumer electronics. The market for consumer electronics is vast, and the product offerings are deep. If you choose “consumer electronics” as your niche, you’re going to find yourself way too deep in competition.
Instead, you need to narrow your focus. Perhaps you will concentrate only on computer accessories, such as printers, scanners, keyboards and mice. Maybe you’ll hone in on audio equipment. You might even go more narrow, and sell only accessories for personal audio players, such as cases and headphones.
Choose core products
Part of the nature of running a niche drop ship business is that your product offerings are going to change over time. One of the ways you can help create continuity in your business is to choose core products that don’t change.
Let’s take, again, the example above. Cases for personal audio players are going to change constantly, as Apple releases their new iPod or as other companies put out their new products. You are going to constantly be adding and removing items from your product catalog. That’s the nature of this business.
However, one thing that doesn’t change is headphone technology. Choose a flagship headphone product, and make that a core offering. While new types of headphones will eventually replace the ones you’re selling right now, they’ll have a lot more staying power than other products in your niche.
Sometimes, you go with what works
There’s a reason there are so many jewelry drop ship businesses: jewelry sells, and can easily be sold at a profit in a drop ship business. Sometimes, you choose a niche or particular products in a niche just because they sell.
Don’t be afraid to choose niche drop ship products that everyone else is selling. Just be prepared to find a way to add value to that product, and to find related products that aren’t as saturated in terms of the Internet marketplace.
