Mining Infomercials for Drop Ship Product Ideas

Everyone has seen the infomercials that air on late night TV. They feature outrageous pitchmen and zany antics, at times, as they attempt to convince you to buy a given product. No matter how silly you might thing infomercials are, they make money. Part of the reason that these infomercials make money is the sheer spectacle of it all; some people are taken in by the antics and the “over the top” message.

Still, the fact of the matter is that many products you might see on an infomercial are actually products that people want to buy. Many products that start out on infomercials, such as OxiClean, wind up on the shelves of big box retailers such as Wal-Mart.

So, how can you put infomercials to use for you? Infomercials can be a wonderful source of drop ship product ideas. If you know what to look for in an infomercial and the product offered, you may find that your drop ship business can skyrocket.

Longevity is Key

One thing you want to look for from infomercials is longevity. If a product has had infomercials for a couple of years or more, it’s probably a product for which there exists a healthy market. If, on the other hand, you randomly see one infomercial for a product and then never see another, it might be something that just doesn’t sell. That doesn’t mean you should reject products from relatively new infomercials, it just means that products that have been around for a longer amount of time are a safer bet.

The Infomercial Audience is Paid

A product on the infomercial might be amazing, but you had better believe that the ooh’s and aah’s may not be genuine. The fact is that most infomercial audiences get some sort of reward – even if it is just free product – for being in the infomercial. Here again, it doesn’t mean that the product is bad, it just means that you can’t gauge a product’s potential by the infomercial audience.

The Infomercial is a Great Source

If you find a product you do indeed want to sell, the infomercial can really help you out. You can use statistics or data, for example, in your own pitch for the product. You might even get some other ideas about how to market the product from the infomercial. While you shouldn’t just watch the infomercial and base your sales pitch entirely on the infomercial, it can be a great source of marketing ideas for the product.
