If you’re new to the world of drop shipping, it can be a little bit challenging to figure out exactly where to start. There are so many different suppliers, services and opportunities that it’s easy to get lost in the quagmire of possibilities. If you want to make drop shipping work for you, you need to have a solid understanding of how the process works and what sorts of options are available to you.
The basic idea behind drop shipping is simple. A company manufactures goods, which are then provided to distributors. These distributors get the product from the manufacturer to the market through a number of ways, whether it’s importing the products from one country or another, or whether it’s delivering products directly to consumers. The distributing company is also sometimes known as a “wholesaler” or “wholesale supplier.”
Wholesalers can get those products to market in a number of different ways. They can, of course, deliver the products to a retail store, who is able to place a sizable markup on those products before they’re sold to consumers. The wholesaler may actually own their own fleet of trucks, or they may rent transportation space.
In some cases, larger retail stores will have their own shipping infrastructure. In this case, the retail store collects the goods from the wholesalers directly.
Other wholesalers get their products to market by shipping them with a shipping service such as UPS, FedEx or the United States Post Office. The wholesaler packages the products and ships them to the retailer.
Drop shipping enables businesses to bypass part of this process. A wholesaler that does drop shipping doesn’t ship the products to a retail outlet. Instead, the wholesaler ships the products from their warehouse directly to the customer, based on orders it receives from the retailer. This is a tremendously successful business model, and one that’s used by many online retailers.
By utilizing the drop shipping process, a small business can actually market and sell products that are then shipped directly from the wholesaler to the customer. In some instances, the wholesaler may even be able to “brand” the products for the business, including the reseller’s contact information and business logos.
Starting an online retail outlet utilizing drop shipping is one of the best ways to do business today. The key, of course, is finding reliable wholesalers who have quality products and are reliable in terms of their shipping practices.
